Comedian Dom Joly, 45, is best known for his shows Trigger Happy TV and Fool Britannia. He grew up in Beirut in the middle of a war.

I had a very odd childhood. Half of it was spent in Lebanon in the middle of a civil war, then I’d spend the rest of the time at boarding school in England talking about pony clubs with people who are now in the Tory cabinet.

You get used to being in a war zone. Lebanon is a beautiful place. I was an hour away from the beach and an hour from the ski slopes but then we’d be having lunch and hear huge amounts of machine gun fire. It was only when we had a visitor from England we realised how unusual it was. It gave me quite a black sense of humour. I remember sitting in the basement for several days…
